Rufus Sewell says his efficiency as Prince Andrew was impressed by David Brent.
The 56-year-old actor performs the royal in ‘Scoop’, Netflix’s retelling of the notorious ‘Newsnight’ interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew and he revealed he regarded to Ricky Gervais’ ‘The Workplace’ character for inspiration.
He advised The Mirror: “To me, it is a horrible factor however watching the interview his efficiency jogged my memory of David Brent greater than the rest. That is to not be ignored.
“After I learn the script, my instant feeling was, ‘Yeah, I believe I might do that’. In fact, I considered the potential repercussions. After which I believed, ‘I am not gonna get a knighthood anyway’.”
When requested what he thought Andrew’s motivations have been for doing the ill-advised interview, Rufus stated: “I believe he feels a real sense of victimhood, and the way not truthful every part is, which is kind of palpable. It is also a really, very restricted creativeness as to the humanity of different folks. I believe he has monumental compassion and sympathy… for himself.
“There was no getting away from the truth that what he did, and the solutions he gave, have been absurd in addition to jaw-droppingly outrageous and unattainable to not chortle at actually.”
The film is predicated on the guide ‘Scoop’ by former ‘Newsnight’ booker Sam McAlister, who secured the interview.
Sam – who’s performed by Billie Piper within the film – stated: “This was a person who was now persona non grata. He was the Forgotten Prince, an issue Prince who had gone from a hero to a zero. Princess Beatrice was going to get married: he needed to stroll her down the aisle. He was about to show 60: he needed to get pleasure from his birthday. He needed to return to the great lifestyle that he had had.”
