Police have arrested a 27-year-old salesman for allegedly stealing jewelry valued at Rs 1.05 crore from a store in Maharashtra’s Thane metropolis, an official mentioned on Sunday.
The accused, Rahul Jayantilal Mehta, who maintained a lavish life-style funded by his thefts, was arrested from Mira Street space on March 26 when he got here to satisfy his girlfriend, Naupada police station’s senior inspector Abhay Mahajan mentioned.
The proprietor of the jewelry store, situated in Talao Pali space, approached the police on March 25 in reference to the theft following which an FIR was registered towards the accused beneath Indian Penal Code part 408 (felony breach of belief by clerk or servant).
The accused, who was accountable for overseeing gross sales on the store, allegedly stole 70 items of jewelry, weighing a complete of 1.59 kg and valued at round Rs 1,05,55,766, between November 2023 and March 2024, the official mentioned.
The accused was absent from work since March 8, 2024, and was reported lacking by his spouse on March 15.
As per the investigation, he travelled to neighbouring Mumbai, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and different locations to evade being caught, the official mentioned.
The police obtained a tip that he was planning to return to satisfy his girlfriend in Mira Street space right here on March 26.

Following the person’s interrogation, the police got here to know that he was sustaining a lavish life-style funded by the cash amassed from the thefts, together with frequent visits to pubs and five-star inns, he mentioned.
Up to now, 900 gms of jewelry costing round Rs 62.10 lakh has been recovered from the accused, the police mentioned.
