Focus Features has premiered the trailer for the re-teaming of “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti and director Alexander Payne in “The Holdovers”.
David Hemingson penned the comedy starring Giamatti as a universally disliked and curmudgeonly instructor (Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go.
Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them – a damaged, brainy 15-year-old troublemaker (Sessa) – and with the school’s head cook, who caters to sons of privilege and has just lost a son in Vietnam (Randolph).
All three are very different shipwrecked people who share comic misadventures during two very snowy weeks in New England and realise that none of them is beholden to their past.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Carrie Preston, Gillian Vigman, Tate Donovan, Michael Provost, Brady Hepner and newcomer Dominic Sessa star.
Oscar-winner Payne directs from a screenplay written by David Hemmingson and marks the filmmaker’s first film in six years since 2017’s “Downsizing”. The film hits select theaters on October 27th, followed by a wide release on November 10th.
